Seventeen-year-old Kyle Haas led the way for the Halton Hills Blue Fins at the Eastern Canadian Championships this past weekend in Montreal, winning the 50m and 100m open backstroke events in sizzling times.

Haas began the weekend by breaking the meet record (as well as the HHBF record) in the 50m back by posting the 20th fastest time in Canadian history (25.07 seconds) and followed that by winning the 100m back, posting the seventh-fastest men’s time in Canada this season, 54.61 seconds.
Haas also placed fourth in 200m individual medley, breaking the HHBF club record, while also surpassing previous bests in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

“This was really important for my confidence,” said Haas, whose 2011-2012 season was muted due to a late season injury. “I’m really excited to be swimming fast again heading into World Championship Trials. It was also very exciting to have a larger team with and all the support from home. I couldn’t have done this without my team.”

Blue Fin Matthew Fox finished eighth in the 200m back, with both Aysia Leckie and Keri-Lyn Copeland faring well at their first Eastern Canadian Championships.

Earlier in the month, the Blue Fins repeated their best-ever finish at the Central Region Short Course Championships in Toronto, placing 10th out of over 35 teams.
The highlight from that meet was two Blue Fins winning the individual high point awards-12-year-old Lauren Monhemius and Britney Dortona, 13. Monhemius won the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle races, while placing second in the 100m free. Dortona finished first in the 50m free, 200m free, 400m free, 800m free and was second in the 100m free.

Many Blue Fins have won the High Point Trophy in the past, but this was the first time that two of them have won it in the same meet. Fifteen-year-old Bronte McMaster placed second in her age group in what would have been the HHBF’s third High Point Trophy that weekend.

The Blue Fins ended up with a total of 29 medals and countless top eight finishes. Medalists included:

Bronte McMaster— 1st 200m back; 2nd 400m free; 3rd 800m free
Mitchell Krafczek— 1st 100m breaststroke; 2nd 200m breast
Bjoern-Ole Schrader— 1st 100m back; 2nd 200m back & 200m fly
Kathleen Reedman— 1st 50m free; 2nd 100m free
Chris Fox— 1st 100m butterfly
Livy Olson— 2nd 400m IM
Emma Fender— 1st 200m breast; 2nd 200m IM; bronze 400m IM
Emily Collis— 3rd 1,500m free

Seventeen Blue Fins have qualified to represent Halton Hills at the two provincial championships later this month.

I came across this little story while surfing the web tonight. I hope that you all read it, enjoy it and reflect on it. 

Happiness is an attitude.

The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. "I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. "Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room .... just wait." "That doesn't have anything to do with it," she replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it ... It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away ... just for this time in my life."
